2024–2025 Season
Passing The Torch
Our Reflection
After the previous season, five team members graduated from FLL and moved on to FTC and FRC, the higher-level robotics competitions. A new team was formed with eight students from 5th to 7th grade. It was also a new challenge for both the coach and the team - unlike the previous group, the students were not as familiar with one another, so building teamwork and communication required time and patience.
Our previous team members stayed as mentors to this new team. Since no member has preivous FLL experience, we employed a new strategy: each team member selected one robot mission and worked to refine and perfect it throughout the season. By taking ownership of a specific mission, students developed deeper understanding while contributing to the team’s overall performance.
This season's theme is "Submerged". We discovered the shockingly severe plastic pollution in our oceans and the devastating impact it has on marine life. To address this, we advocated for using biodegradable shopping bags and created a "Smart Bag Scanner" to identify biodegradable bags at checkout and give incentives to customers who use biodegradable bags.
To understand the issue, we conducted a public survey at a local grocery store. Initially, unresponsive customers left us disheartened until one member noticed that families stopped more often because we offer candies to children. We then adapted by targeting shoppers who weren't in a rush and expanded our reach to neighbors. This taught us the importance of observation and adaptive strategy.
As we plowed through the season, the team steadily grew stronger. Along the way, each team member's unique strengths emerged. Our dedication led to a successful year, earning total 6 awards at the Regional, Super Regional, and State levels. Just as importantly, the team bond deepened as we worked—and laughed—through the challenges together. By the end of the season, we had grown into a confident and supportive team.
